Eighteen

Sam stepped into the hotel’s lounge area. The guy working the desk had said the breakfast buffet was back here. Standing in the doorway, he scanned the small room. There were about eight small tables in the center of the room, with four larger tables spread out alongside the windows facing the small pool. The buffet the desk manager had mentioned must have been the scant accommodations at the front of the room. He saw a juice machine that offered orange and apple, a rack with pastries and toast, a waffle machine, and a couple covered silver dishes that might be hiding some eggs and bacon under their shiny lids.

Since it was just after seven in the morning, the room was empty, save a hotel employee dressed in white and black wiping down the counter with a towel and an older couple sitting at the table, sipping coffee and eating Danishes. They were probably in their seventies, and from the way they scowled at each other across the table Sam was willing to guess they hated each other.

Sam hadn’t bothered to change out of what he’d slept in, a pair of plaid sleeping pants and a Night of the Living Dead t-shirt. He didn’t feel bad, though, after seeing that the old folks were in their robes.

Sam crossed the room to where the buffet started. There were stacks of paper plates, plastic utensils, and two different sizes of cups. The hotel employee approached him, smiling as her hand wiped circles on the counter with the towel.

“Excuse me,” he said.

She looked up at him. Her eyes were the color of almonds, her skin the color toffee. She had a lovely face, smooth and beautiful. Short, she had a narrow waist and hips that flared out and connected to a pair of thick thighs. “Yes?” she said in an accent Sam couldn’t quite place. He noticed the name on the tag pinned above her breast read MARCI.

“Do you have to-go boxes? My uh…” What was Addison to him now? “My friend is still sleeping and I’m afraid she won’t get down here in time.”

Marci tilted her head to the side, eyes scrunching to almost shut. “I’m sorry, we don’t. You can make her plate, though.”

Nodding, Sam sighed. “Thanks.”

He’d hoped to take both meals upstairs and surprise Addison with breakfast in bed. Now, he would have to eat alone down here and take hers up with him afterward. It’d be too hard to carry two plates without lids as well as two drinks without dropping something. Besides, that’d give Addison more time to sleep. He didn’t know if she was the kind of person who woke up in a rage. His sweet gesture could be thrown back in his face.

Sam ignored the racks with the dehydrated-looking pastries and moved over to the hot plates. He scooped what was meant to be scrambled eggs onto his plate. It looked like yellow foam mattress padding, but mostly smelled like eggs. There was bacon in the next dish, which he nabbed five pieces from.
